PWM can be described as a dimming process which is common in LEDs using constant-current drivers. The method works by altering the frequency of the current, which results in variations to the average current within the string. PWM is a reliable method for achieving precise lighting dimming needs, as it is able to handle large dimming rates with a 100-Hz frequency (high frequency, which means that human eyes cannot see the flickering effects) without causing any harm to the color of the LED or the temperature. To dim the LED the LED has to be toggled at a rapid speed. For example, at the most extreme settings (full output) the LED remains "on" and is not turned off. When the dimming rate is 75 percent lighting, the lights are "on" 25% at a time. If plotted on graphs the shifts in current appear to be staggered similar to an evenly spaced set of blocks or stairs that do not have any long-term ascending or declining pattern (rates/values of increase/dips are constant).
This kind of dimming is perfect to light systems which have to be dimmed to less than 40 percent in a consistent manner. PWM is ideal for color mixing requirements because of its precise dimming characteristics. Additionally, it is used in electronic systems by directly digital controls.
DC dimming is superior to pahse dimming. DC dimming is better for the eyes. However, even at very low values, the flickering screen will not be visible for our eye. However, it can cause all kinds of discomforts. The PWM Dimming may cause discomforts such as headaches and eyestrain during the first phase. It may trigger migraines following prolonged exposure.
